Facility description

In operation since the early 1950s and owned by Flint Hills Resources since 1981, the West Plant refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, processes approximately 300,000 barrels of oil per day into products including jet fuel, diesel, and low-sulfur gasoline.

Products from the West Plant are shipped via Flint Hills' pipeline system, which comprises two main lines, to the company's terminals in San Antonio, Bastrop, Austin, Waco, and the Dallas/Ft. Worth area -- including the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport. Flint Hills’ primary aromatics chemicals production facility also is located within the Corpus Christi refinery.

Approximately 900 people work at the facility.

Upgrade project

In August 2008 Flint Hills announced that it will add a new sulfur recovery unit and build a diesel desulfurization unit at the West Plant. The company will invest more than $250 million in the upgrades, which should conclude in the first half of 2010.

The two new units will help Flint Hills meet growing demand in Texas for ultra low-sulfur diesel and process heavier and sour crudes in a more flexible manner. According to the company, the sulfur recovery unit will enable the refinery to process additional feedstocks that will improve its competitive position. The diesel desulfurization unit will be used to upgrade low-value products into high-value products such as ultra low-sulfur diesel.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. on Oct. 21, 2008, announced that it is performing engineering, procurement, and construction services the West Plant's new diesel desulfurization unit.

According to Flint Hills, the capital project should support approximately 500 contract positions.
