The Galsi SpA consortium is building an 837-km-long natural gas pipeline to carry natural gas across the Mediterranean Sea from Algeria to Italy via Sardinia. The project represents a major new source of natural gas for Italy, which is highly reliant on oil and gas imports. Members of the consortium include Edison SpA (20.8% share capital), Sonatrach (41.6% of the capital), Enel (15.6%), Hera Trading (10.4%), and Sfirz (11.6%).

Roughly two-thirds of the pipeline will be offshore, and more than one-third of the pipeline will extend through waters up to 2,800 meters in depth. When it reaches the port of Cagliari in southern Sardinia, the pipeline will traverse the island to its northern end at Olbia. From Olbia, another subsea segment will begin; it will make landfall on the mainland near Piombino in Tuscany. Once the pipeline reaches the mainland, it will link to Italy's natural gas grid as well as other markets in Europe. Approximately 8 billion cubic meters (bcm) of the 9-10 bcm of natural gas the pipeline will carry per year is destined for the Italian market.

The consortium is responsible for developing the engineering and securing the major permits and authorizations for the project. Snam Rete Gas SpA will build the pipeline and oversee natural gas transport once it is in operation. Operations are expected to begin in the 2012-2013 time frame.
