Poland's gas distributor PGNiG has picked Canadian engineering company SNC-Lavalin to design a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal it plans to build in Swinoujscie on the Baltic Coast, the company said in a statement.

SNC-Lavalin's 26 million zlotys offer to design the terminal beat five other bidders, including France's Suez Tractebel, PGNiG said.

The design-stage of the project will take nine months and the company expects to receive construction permits in the second half of this year, allowing it to begin building work.

PGNiG plans to complete the terminal by the end of 2011 and receive 2.5 billion cubic meters of liquefied gas per year as part of Poland's strategy to limit its dependence on imports from Russia.
