Project description

ExxonMobil Chemical Co. on Nov. 6, 2007, broke ground on a second world-scale steam cracker complex in Singapore.

The new facility will be located at and integrated with the company's existing Singapore refinery, and it will offer the company feedstock, operating, and investment synergies for both the chemical plant and refinery. The project will help Singapore achieve its goal to be a global petrochemicals hub and will help ExxonMobil Chemical meet growing demand in Asia Pacific.

According to ExxonMobil Chemical, the new petrochemical project will include the following: a world-scale, 1 million ton-per-year (t/y) ethylene steam cracker, two 650,000-t/y polyethylene units, a 450,000-t/y polypropylene unit, a 300,000-t/y specialty elastomers unit, an aromatics extraction unit to produce 340,000 t/y of benzene, and an oxo-alcohol expansion of 125,000 t/y, and a 220-megawatt power cogeneration unit.

Jeffrey W. Davis, ExxonMobil Chemical's Asia Pacific manufacturing director, said the new complex will process a broad range of feedstocks and convert them into products such as new metallocene-based Vistamaxx specialty elastomers, Exceed polyethylene resins, and Exact plastomers.

ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd has awarded the design, engineering, procurement and construction (DEPC) contract for the steam cracker recovery unit to The Shaw Group. Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding and Heurtey have won the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for the steam cracker furnaces. In addition, Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding has garnered EPC contracts for the polypropylene and specialty elastomers units. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has won the EPC contract for the two polyethylene units.

When the project concludes in early 2011, Singapore will be home to ExxonMobil's largest owned and operated petrochemical complex and its largest integrated chemical and refining site.

The project is expected to create as many as 10,000 construction jobs. The new facility will support approximately 400 permanent plant and business positions.
